Concrete Steps to a New Look

Muenster Concrete creates custom looks for your stairs using a stamping technique, a broom finish, or a mixed combination of both. A 3D cantilever edging technique makes the sides of your stairs look like natural stone or brick.

Our cement contractors can also add colors to further make steps that go beyond providing access but also make a distinctive statement.

How Old Steps Take Flight

Muenster specializes in upgrading or even outright replacing existing residential concrete stairs, steps, stoops, and porches. The result is not only more functional and much safer walking paths but also more attractive stairs.

There are a number of ways we can do this:

  • Widen an existing stoop to provide greater accessibility.
  • Use a stamp-able overlay to cover existing concrete stairs that are still highly usable and structurally sound but need a facelift to restore and improve the appearance.
  • Remove concrete stairs that are failing in both structural integrity and aesthetics, and replace them with new concrete stairs that are highly durable and complement your residence and surrounding landscaping.

Benefits of Concrete Stairs from Muenster

The many advantages of our expertly installed or replaced concrete stairways include:

Easy Installation

Concrete steps can be installed quickly so that stairs are ready for use almost immediately. Note that concrete cannot be poured during rainy conditions, so it is possible that scheduled days for installation may be delayed due to weather.

Design

Concrete is adaptable to numerous design schemes. For example, stamped concrete can provide a slate or brick look; another is exposing the aggregate to provide another kind of look. Broom finished steps are another distinctive look, as well as the addition of coloring and 3D edging to create a natural stone or brick appearance.

Safety

Concrete stairs are fire-resistant. If a texture is applied to the surface, a concrete stair provides traction to prevent slips and falls. Concrete stoops and porches are also highly stable, and practically invulnerable to harsh weather conditions.

Low Maintenance

There is little maintenance required for concrete beyond periodic cleaning to remove dirt, debris, and other obstructions. You can expect your concrete steps to last a very long time.

Muenster Concrete Stair Installation Process

Design & Planning

The first step is to design the stairs according to the specifications and requirements of the homeowner. This includes determining the concrete stair’s dimensions, number of steps, rise and run of each step, and the overall layout of the staircase. In addition, the design must comply with local building codes and regulations.

Site Preparation

Muenster Concrete professionals clear the space, level the ground, and ensure proper drainage to prevent water accumulation where the concrete stairs are to be located.

Formwork Installation

Forms constructed of wood or metal are used to shape the stairs according to the dimensions of the design. Forms are securely anchored and braced to prevent movement during the pouring and curing process. Once the concrete cures, the forms are removed.

Steel Reinforcement

Steel rebar is placed according to the design specifications, typically in a grid pattern within each step and along the edges of the staircase. The rebar provides extra stability and strength.

Concrete Mixing & Pouring

Once the formwork and reinforcement are in place, concrete is mixed according to the required strength and consistency. Concrete is poured into the formwork, starting from the bottom step, and working upward. Care is taken to ensure that the concrete is evenly distributed and properly compacted to eliminate air pockets and achieve a smooth surface.

Finishing

After the concrete is poured, it is leveled and smoothed using floats and trowels to create a uniform surface. Any excess concrete is removed, and the edges of each step are rounded or chamfered to provide a clean, finished look. A broom finish provides a slip-resistant surface, as well as an aesthetically pleasing look.

Curing

Curing is perhaps the most critical step in building concrete stairs. Curing involves maintaining optimal moisture and temperature to allow the concrete to harden and achieve its full strength. To ensure proper curing, the concrete stairs are covered with plastic sheeting, or a curing compound is applied, or water is added to the surface to prevent rapid moisture loss. We apply one or several of these curing methods depending on weather conditions and the complexity of the installation.

Formwork Removal

Once the concrete stairs have sufficiently cured, formwork is carefully and gradually removed to prevent damage to the concrete and ensure that it retains its shape and finish.

Final Touches

After formwork is removed, any imperfections or blemishes in the concrete surface are repaired. The stairs are sealed or coated to enhance durability, protect against moisture penetration, and improve resistance to wear and tear.

Safety Features

Depending on local building codes and safety requirements, as well as homeowner preferences, handrails, guardrails, and non-slip surfaces may be added to the stairs to enhance safety and accessibility.
